Description
The Mahoning County Infirmary is a little known location in Canfield, OH. In fact, the actual location is now the site of one of Canfield’s most beautiful subdivisions known as Stonebridge. Stonebridge is the idea most Americans have when they think of their dream home and dream neighborhood. Little do they know that hundreds if not thousands of bodies are buried on the land of the housing development. This location was once known as The Mahoning County Infirmary also known as The Pogy also known as the Poor House.
The Mahoning County Infirmary was located on Herbert Road in Canfield Township. It was known by various names; the County Home, the Poor House and locally as the old “Pogey.” The homeless, handicapped, elderly and poor were housed there. Some stayed only a short time and some stayed until their death. There are records of women who gave birth there and it is also recorded that at times children lived in the home.
A search was initiated in deed records to establish when the Infirmary was established. Through these records it was discovered that the county home opened in November of 1855. The original proprietors of the land where the Infirmary was located were stockholders in the Connecticut Land Company. They acquired ownership in 1798. Judson Canfield sold this particular lot (lot 1, 4th division) to Otis Guild with a deed dated January 4, 1800. It is interesting to see that the land was listed in Campfield Township.

Some people refer to the Stonebridge subdivision as the Bel-Air of Canfield, OH. I find that very funny because the majority of it’s residents don’t even realize the history. I’ve been to the neighborhood and it really is posh. Rolling hills, beautiful trees, huge homes and bodies. No one thinks about these bodies but they are buried in the neighborhood which used to the be property/location of the Mahoning County Infirmary. All kidding aside, I have many friends that live there and it truly is a beautiful subdivision anyone would want to live. I’ve also never heard of any ghost encounters, so the spirits at least seem to be content. Still……
