Description
The Jungle Inn was one of the Mafia’s most famous gambling dens which was operated by Mike and John Farah. It was located just outside Youngstown in Trumbull County. Taxis would take housewives to gamble during the day while their husbands were at work.
The roadhouse operated until the late 1940’s when the Governor of Ohio sent in a team of agents from the state liquor control board. The Jungle Inn never reopened. The building burned down in the 1970’s.
Mike Farah was known to authorities as the former part-owner (with his brother John and Tony Delsanter) of the Jungle Inn gambling casino, in Liberty township, just outside of Youngstown. James “Jack White” Licavoli, Cleveland-based Mafia leader, also appeared to hold an interest in the establishment. (Licavoli was known to have partnered with Mike Farah in the Girard Novelty Company in Niles and the Triangle Novelty Company in Warren.) The casino, opened following the repeal of Prohibition, proved itself impervious to law enforcement until the late 1940s, when the Ohio governor sent in agents from the state liquor control board. The Jungle Inn was closed after a raid in 1949.
Note: The exact location is not known but with research we think this is accurate. It’s about 50 yards off the road from the railroad tracks. Across the street from the junkyard there is a driveway and it’s that driveway that takes you to the Jungle Inn.
