- Key Information: The army crossed the Great Crossing, encountering a deserted Indian encampment with threatening messages painted on trees.
About one mile to the southward was the Great Crossing of the Youghiogheny Squaw’s Fort Camp and Spears Tavern. Major George Washington on his tour to the Ohio in 1753 encamped here at the “Big Fork” the “Great Crossings” November 17, 1753. Lieutenant Colonel George Washington encamped here from May 18-24, 1754. Again in 1755, 1770 and 1784 he forded the Youghiogheny at the mouth of Braddock Run at the “Great Crossings”, Braddock encamped at Squaw’s Fort June 23, 1755.
