Description
Ko Phi Phi Leh, part of the Phi Phi Archipelago in the Andaman Sea, is an island located in Thailand’s Krabi province. It is encompassed within the Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park.
This is the main location of the iconic movie “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
During the 1999 production of “The Beach,” which was released in February 2000 by 20th Century Fox, sparked controversy due to alterations made to the natural landscape of Ko Phi Phi Leh. To create a more idyllic “paradise-like” setting for the film, the production involved bulldozing and landscaping the beach area. This included modifying sand dunes, clearing coconut trees and grass to expand the beach space. Additionally, the crew removed 5 tonnes of garbage left by tourists. Despite offers to restore and replant the area, these were not accepted. 20th Century Fox established a fund to rehabilitate and return the beach to its original state. However, lawsuits ensued, with many believing the ecological damage was irreversible and restoration efforts unsuccessful.
