Description
This is the house where the band Incubus filmed the “Morning View” album. The album was named after the street the home is located on. To create their album, the band set up residence in Malibu, California, along a coastal strip named “Morning View Drive.” Alex Katunich, the former bassist known as “Dirk Lance,” reflected that while the band had attempted a similar approach during the creation of *Make Yourself*, they lacked the influence to fully realize it then. “For this album,” he explained, “we sought a creative sanctuary. The goal was to make the recording process feel like a seamless part of our daily lives rather than a separate job.”
Lead singer Brandon Boyd mentioned the group’s preference for easy beach access, which he humorously attributed to their being “spoiled brats.” He shared, “It’s refreshing to take a beach break after a day of music. It helps us reset.” He also revealed that the album’s name, *Morning View*, was inspired directly by their Malibu street, enhancing their creative energy. “The ocean view as we arrived was invigorating,” Boyd recalled.
Guitarist Mike Einziger discussed the band’s unconventional recording choice in a December 2001 interview. Despite skepticism from their label and management, the band was determined to foster an ideal creative environment. “We were clear about our goals,” Einziger stated, emphasizing their commitment to their artistic vision.
By the time they began recording *Morning View*, Incubus was riding the wave of success from “Drive,” the hit single from *Make Yourself*. Boyd reflected on this period in 2012, noting the mix of positive and challenging experiences that shaped the album. Emotional upheaval from recent personal breakups also colored his songwriting during this time. “The dual heartbreak was tough, but it infused the album with genuine emotion,” he said in a 2021 interview.
The band penned 30 tracks during their stay, with 13 making the final album cut. Some tracks not initially released, like “Anything,” later appeared on their compilation album *Monuments and Melodies*, alongside hits such as “Wish You Were Here” and “Are You In?”
Post-*Make Yourself*, Boyd’s rising fame drew significant female attention, earning him a spot on Teen People’s list of “The Hottest Guys in Music.” Meanwhile, Einziger ventured into other creative realms, composing a soundtrack for the film *Sol Goode*, released in early 2003. This film, featuring a cameo by Jared Leto, coincided with Thirty Seconds to Mars joining Incubus on tour the previous year.
