Description
The ‌‌Veterans Memorial Bridge was the first high level bridge to span the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. It officially ope‌ned on Thanksgiving Day 1917.The bridge connects Detroit and Superior avenues, It cost $5.284 million and the bridge took 5 years to complete‌.‌‌‌‌‌
The center span rises 96′ above the Cuyahoga River and has an overhead arch of steel 591′ long. Altogether the bridge is 3,112′ long and, stretches 5,630′ totally’. The bridge has 2 decks with the top designed of vehicles and pedestrians and the lower deck for trolley cars (sometimes called the subway). There was enough space to have 4 cars side by side.
Eventually the trolley operations ceased in 1954 and the lower level was closed. Occasionally the deck is open to the public but not on a regular basis, sometimes going years between tours.
