Description
The original World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York City, was a significant complex of seven buildings, including the iconic Twin Towers. Opened in 1973 and tragically destroyed in the 9/11 attacks in 2001, the Twin Towers were once the world’s tallest buildings. The complex, which encompassed substantial office space, was designed to accommodate a large number of people and included other notable buildings like the Marriott World Trade Center and structures labeled 3 to 7 WTC.
On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, as a response to U.S. foreign policy. Two hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers, causing significant casualties and damage. The South Tower collapsed first, followed by the North Tower, and later 7 World Trade Center. Surrounding buildings were also destroyed or damaged. The death toll was initially feared to be in the tens of thousands but was ultimately confirmed to be 2,753, excluding the hijackers. The victims included civilians, firefighters, and law enforcement officers. The attacks ignited a global response and marked a pivotal moment in history.
